“How will converging geophysical and socioeconomic pressures shape Arctic development by 2050?”
American Geophysical Union 2023
Arctic Frontiers 2023
The Navigating Convergent Pressures on Arctic Development (CPAD) research team were a strong presence at the Arctic Frontiers Conference held January 30 - February 2, 2023 in Tromsø, Norway.
Arctic Frontiers is a catalyst for decision-making and network building mobilizing key voices of science, policy, business, and local Arctic communities to rapidly turn knowledge into actions. Arctic Frontiers’ partnership network of some of the world’s leading actors in the region sets the agenda for responsible and sustainable development of the Arctic.
CPAD researchers were featured in the Big Picture session “North on the Move”. Scott Stephenson offered the session’s introductory video (below). Abbie Tingstad participated in a panel alongside Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre; International Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Sara Olsvig of Greenland; and CEO of Freyr Battery, Tom Einar Jensen discussing how the two global drivers – climate change and geopolitics – are impacting development in the Arctic.
In addition, Ana Rivera unveiled her Pythia visualization tool in a science session on occupational health and safety. Her tool was also featured in the “North on the Move” Big Picture Session.

Arctic Circle Assembly 2022
On October 15 2022, CPAD researchers presented a panel titled “Converging Pressures on Arctic Coastal Development” at the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Panelists spoke about the policy implications of challenges facing Arctic coastal communities through the following lenses:
Charles Norchi: International Law
Amanda Lynch: Climate Science
Michael Goldstein: Finance
Abbie Tingstad: Security
Mia Bennett: Geopolitics
Arctic Frontiers 2022
On May 8, 2022, Abbie Tingstad presented a video overview of CPAD at the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø, Norway. The conference centered on pathways to economic development, sustainability, climate action, security, stability, and respect for science in decision-making, and on opportunities to pursue these pathways collaboratively in the midst of the current geopolitical crisis. Dr. Tingstad’s video was shown in the opening plenary session alongside other video addresses from diplomatic and science leaders from around the Arctic region.
